Excited to announce our special screening of Journey Beyond Fear in Geelong on the 8th February hosted by Combined Refugee Action Group - including a Q&A with the filmmakers.
Told through the eyes of a teenage girl and her refugee family in pursuit of resettlement, this emotional roller coaster takes us from despair to joy through hope, humour and love - shattering prevailing stereotypes. A character driven film, featuring three magnetic daughters and shot over 7 years in Malaysia and Australia, it's an extraordinary psychological study of the effects of refugee status. We experience how even the system for seeking asylum the "right way" is incredibly challenging, but those who make it are hugely thankful, can be welcomed by fellow Australians and are eager to contribute to Australian society.
Journey Beyond Fear has received considerable media acclaim - Australia's best known movie critic, David Stratton, giving it 4 out of 5 stars.
A special Q&A screening will be held to conclude Refugee Week at the Regent Cinemas in Ballarat. This screening will be hosted by Ballarat Afghan Action Group (BAAG)and a portion of ticket sales will be donated to them. The Q&A will include filmmakers Robyn Hughan and Steve Warne and will be moderated by Prue Bentley (ABC, South West Victoria). MC for the event will be Yacoob Kazan, BAAG member and proprietor of the popular Kazan Central Asian Restaurant.
'Journey Beyond Fear' is told through the eyes of a teenage girl and her refugee family in pursuit of resettlement. This emotional rollercoaster takes us from despair to joy through hope humour and love - shattering prevailing stereotypes.
"Journey beyond Fear, an excellent documentary from Robyn Hughan, is a genuinely moving experience. This is a journey well worth taking"... 4 Stars - David Stratton, Weekend Australian
Coinciding with the nightly screening of the music video Someone’s Daughter on the external projector throughout March, join us for a special screening of the full length feature documentary Journey Beyond Fear.
Filmed over seven years, Journey Beyond Fear is an emotional rollercoaster taking us from despair to joy through hope, humour and love. A character driven film, featuring three magnetic daughters, it focuses on the experience of those who join the queue to resettle in Australia, making it clear that this is no easy option. It shatters prevailing stereotypes and highlights that becoming part of Australian society without losing one’s cultural identity is achievable. Further to this, Journey Beyond Fear draws attention to the fact that only 1% of refugees registered with the UN are ever resettled. The film has been made with deep passion and commitment to the subject matter, the narrative is lyrical and the visuals are strong, speaking volumes about the family’s situation.
The screening of the film will be immediately followed by a Q&A with members of the creative team behind the film, including Robyn Hughan and Steve Warne.

Coinciding with the nightly screening of the Alyce Platt music video Someone’s Daughter on the external projector throughout March, join us for a special concert to celebrate International Women’s Day, featuring Alyce Platt live on stage in the Ledger Gallery.
Alyce Platt is a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter, guitarist and actor who presents her original music and artistic pursuits through the lens of the Indie-pop artist. In this last two years, without planning to, Alyce began work on what has now become her third album—Bain Douche—a low-fi, quirky, intimate collection of re-imagined gems connecting in a strange way to what we were all going through. Recorded daily on her iPhone in the echoes of her bathroom, they have now been expanded into an album featuring some of Melbourne’s finest musicians.
At this show, Alyce will mix her originals with the Bain Douche interpretations, the full array of what makes her music beautifully tick. The centrepiece of the performance will be the enigmatic Someone’s Daughter—written by Alyce Platt and included in the extraordinary documentary Journey Beyond Fear. Both emotive and heartfelt, Someone’s Daughter is performed with passion and intensity by Alyce and brings home the difficult journey many refugees face from a female perspective.
Joined by Clare Moore on vibes and Stephen Hadley on bass, come and see Alyce Platt bring this powerful song to life.
